A Stencil Solution

Amber at Amber Interiors Blog just posted a very cool way to customize curtains with great stenciling techniques.  Check it out if you haven't seen it already!   I have only stenciled things for my kids but her post inspired me to look in a different direction.  It got me looking and I found a lot of really great patterns on the web that look strikingly similar to some of my favorite wallpapers right now.  If you aren't really ready/willing/able to commit to wallpaper, maybe stenciling is the way to go...look here to see what I mean:

{Olive Leaf Stencils}

Love this look for a powder room, hallway or entryway - a bold design
that would make a fantastic impression.

{Olive Leaf Stencils}
This is a great solution to add what would appear to be tiling to an upper section of a bathroom - tons of visual interest without the investment or commitment!

{Royal Design Studios}
This copper really pops agains the gray and green - very nice combo.

{Royal Design Studios}
An awesome way to add a ton of interest to a ceiling.
It looks a bit moroccan to me and I totally love it.

{Royal Design Studios}
A more feminine version - I'd like to see it in a laundry room or feminine office.

{Olive Leaf Stencils}
I think this basket-weave has a Williams-Sonoma feel to it.  Very classic.

{Olive Leaf Stencils}
This pattern is a little earthy and has some movement - very pretty.
I think I'd do it in some dark earth colors to give it more depth - chocolates, olive green (sorry for the pun) and maybe some black to ground it.

{Olive Leaf Stencils}
A bit of metallic - very cool for an entry or a dining room!
Or, with black and silver for an uneventful - turned stunning - hallway.

{Olive Leaf Stencils}
Another beautiful geometric pattern - can you tell I am partial to them??!!

{Olive Leaf Stencils}
 This is such a fun pattern.
I would love to use this in a playroom or office.

{Olive Leaf Stencils}
Ikat looks a bit bohemian here and I totally dig it.

So what do you think?  Do you like this solution or are you still in favor of wallpaper?

  1. I think stencils can have the same impact as wallpaper for sure. It is definitely more cost effective and anyone can do it.

    Thank you for your sweet comments on my blog. You are right about a home in the seventies being built well. The inspector said it was a very solid home. Bonus!

    Have a great weekend Barbara!

  3. These are all so much fun. Only if I don't have to do them, though. I'm way too impatient. Have a great weekend. Mona

  4. i had no idea stencils could look so stylish. this is a great idea for us city girls who are not allowed to wallpaper our rental apartments - a great way to get the wallpaper look and interest without paper installation. this would look great in an entryway or a powder room.

  7. Hi Barbara..every time I come here I wonder why haven't I been here in a few days (always something great to see) but realize there isn't an option to follow you, right? So I now subscribe to you, next best thing! Anyway..love these, they are amazing! I wonder how difficult it is to do, though..I mean do you have to have a ridiculously steady hand to even think of doing this? I love the look and how you could totally customize it..fabulous looking!

  8. Oh how beautiful! I love these bold patterns. But I don't even want to think about the work of stenciling a ceiling.. The result is definitely worth it though!

    Have a great weekend Barbara!

  9. I agree about the patience and steady hand probably required, but even to hire someone to do the work would probably be a lot less than wallpaper - and with less permanent results! And Tina - I am also on twitter but glad you signed up for the email subscription! I'm going to add a link to my twitter account this week so you (or others) can follow that way if you prefer! Thanks to everyone for the nice comments!!!

  11. The stencil or for that matter, the design pattern is the foremost focal. I'm visualizing, that perhaps , either with or without out wallpaper; the imagery of the continoual pattern - well, it can be protruding, (depending where on the wall, ceiling, around a mirror,etcs.- dabbed with puffy paints can be an incredible additive to the rooms overall creative fun with the design pattern in mind for the eye to interlude depth and texture. What do you think?
