Architectural Elements: Dentil Moulding

Hi Everyone!  Did you have a good weekend?  It was sooo hot here in Seattle (well, at least for Seattle :)) but gorgeous weather too.  We had a fantastic time exploring some new Seattle restaurants and sights...we felt like tourists in our new home town!   Anyway, on to today's post:  This small yet lovely detail, originating in classical architecture, truly stands the test of time, so I thought it would make a beautiful detail to study today!

the Dentil moulding will be the accessory that ties all the rooms together regardless whats going on in each room

I first really took notice of it with this Canadian House and Home show home from last year:

I love this look in almost any home decor.  Of course it works easiest with a traditional design, but it somehow also accommodates other styles beautifully!
Let's take a look at some examples:

OBSESSED with this color palette-- greige walls, blue ceiling, dentil crowning, nailhead trim sofa-- all perfect.

living room

Mid-America Scalloped Tooth Dentil Trim - 32 Lineal feet per box (Eight 4' pieces) available in 10 colors

Love the dentil molding, neutral pallette and glossy ceiling... Designed by phoebe Howard

I like the brick, the dentil molding, and the mail slot.

frenchie frenchie... empire chandie and overscaled dentil trim

Gambrel. Nice dentil!

You might have noticed I mostly included moulding only in white.  To me, somehow the white brings the moulding into the present vs. looking old fashioned - so that's just what I was drawn to.

If you would like to read more about beautiful architectural details you can see a post about windows here and ceilings here.

What do you think of it?

It is such a subtle thing, but it can make a room look so much more defined. I like the white too. So happy you are enjoying Seattle!! ebh

I also have white moulding in my own home, but not the dentil one. I think it definitely ads some character and refines a room. You shared again some lovely pictures here! And I'm glad to read you're experiencing hot weather in Seattle, wish it was warm & sunny here as well... It's too rainy in Belgium now.
Have a great week!

I thought this entire house was incredible! I love dentil moulding and always have…it makes it so much dressier! I can't imagine it being as hot there as it is here…it's not supposed to be! Hope it cools off for you soon and glad you are enjoying some new sites in Seattle! Sounds like fun! We did the same thing at the beach and ate at all new restaurants for once! Thanks for sharing this!

Dentil molding adds such a touch of class and elegance to a room. We have several Georgian and Federal Period homes here in Salem that have spectacular dentil molding details. We're working on a Back Bay condo in Boston right now with 13 foot high ceilings with incredible original moldings. All the artwork will be contemporary. The contrast really brings out the period details and vice versa.

Cheers,
John

As usual, beautiful images Barbara! Dentil moulding is so classic and is incorporated into so many architectural styles--Georgian to Victorian to Craftsman. Thanks for sharing all this great inspiration!

So nice to hear that you are settling in to your new life! Dentil moulding is very common here and I really love it. I totally agree that it has to be left white.

Love the look of dentil moulding, and I'm also attracted to white woodwork like you are.
